What mom doesn’t want to make extra cash from home?
I found myself in a situation where I had to find a way to work from home. I was a single mom working two jobs and going to nursing school full-time when my son, Levi, was diagnosed with severe nonverbal autism. I applied for SSI so I could quit my jobs and focus on getting Levi into all the therapy he needed while I finished my last year of nursing school.
Then, life collapsed like dominos. As soon as the SSI was approved, I quit my job. Two weeks after I quit my job, my school was abruptly shut down. A week after my school was shut down, Levi started having seizures, and in the middle of all that the engine in my car blew so I was out of a vehicle.
It was a rough time– to say the least. All the signs of the Universe pointed to me being at home with Levi. I went with it and put all my focus on finding ways to make an income from my couch with a laptop and internet connection.
It was important to me to find income streams that complimented my home life with a four-year-old. You won’t find anything on this list that requires a quiet house like an “Amazon Customer Service Associate”. I’m here to keep it real and offer you practical solutions to making extra cash– mom style.
Blogging is my favorite way to make money online. Having a blog is a catalyst for so many online endeavors. Most eCommerce stores also have a blog.
Blogging has dramatically changed my life in big ways. I found a creative outlet that also makes me money. It’s a dream come true for me. I wrote a whole post on how blogging has changed my life.
2. Amazon FBA
I love making extra cash with Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). The concept is simple: find products online or at a local shop and then flip them for a profit on Amazon.
All moms have to shop for food and supplies. Do some research before you go to Walmart or just cruise the clearance aisle while you’re there with the Amazon Seller’s phone app.
Amazon FBA means that you send your products to an Amazon warehouse and Amazon takes care of the shipping so you just sit back and wait for the money to hit your bank account.
Selling on eBay is a lot like selling on Amazon FBA except you ship the items to the customer yourself. eBay is really great for items like might be restricted on Amazon. Amazon won’t let you sell major brands like Nike unless you can jump through hoops and prove that you source your items in the manner that suits them.
eBay is also a great place to sell unique and antique items that Amazon doesn’t have. Go around your house and see what clothes or booksor antiques you can easily flip.
Facebook is a quick and easy way to either
- Sell items around your house quickly or
- Buy items super cheap and then flip them on Amazon or eBay
Either way, Facebook Marketplace is a great place to always browse through.
5. Offer Up
Like Facebook Marketplace, Offer Up is a great place to sell or flip items. Offer Up, in my opinion, is like a nicer Craigslist. Craigslist is also a great place to source products to sell but I like Offer Up more.
ThredUp is a website that will sell your old clothes for you and pay you part of the sale. They’ll even send you a big bag for you to ship all your old clothes in. The profit you’ll receive depends on the types of clothing brands you’re selling.
ThredUp does charge a lot of fees but that’s because they sort, picture, list, and ship the clothing item for you to the customer. It’s not a bad way to make extra money by just stuffing your old clothes in a bag.
7. Refinish Furniture
I don’t know about you but I love refinishing furniture. There’s something about taking a generic looking dresser I bought off Craigslist for $5 and making it a sophisticated work of art. It’s also a super fun way to spend some time outdoors while my little one plays in his sandbox.
People love unique pieces of furniture for their house and people are always giving away cheap or free pieces of furniture.
Dropshipping is simply selling something while the manufacturer takes care of the shipping so you never have to touch a product.
Dropshipping generally has a very low start-up cost. It takes a little bit of research to create a profitable store but success can mean millions and millions of dollars.
9. Private Label
Creating your own brand of products is very exciting! Alibaba is a great place to find a manufacturer. It’s important that you make sure to use a manufacturer that has good reviews and preferably been in business for a long while.
It takes a little bit of start-up money. The cost depends on what kind of product you want to create but you can create your first product for about $2,000 which includes shipping and prototypes. While $2,000 might seem like a lot of money think about the kind of return you can get from selling 500 products that cost you $4 to make for $15-$20. You’re looking at making an $8,000 profit!
Swagbucks is a survey site that literally pays you to answer questions. You’re not going to get filthy rich taking surveys but its a profitable way to make money while sitting on your couch rewatching The Office for the 7th time (like me).
It’s mundane work but it’s easy work. Why not monetize your downtown by answering random survey questions while you watch Michael Scott be the “World’s Greatest Boss”?
11. Sell Recipes
Write a cookbook and sell it on Amazon or your own personal food blog. If you already have a food blog, you can repurpose your content to create an ebook that has all your prime recipes in it. What a great thing to sell during the holidays!
12. Create a Course
Every person on this planet has some sort of skill or talent. Generally, the things that come easy to you and seem boring are hard for someone else. Teach someone how to do something you’re really good at. There is no limit to what kind of educational course you can make and sell. Go check out Udemy and browse all unique types of courses.
If you already have a blog, you can market and sell your course specifically to your audience using sites like Teachable.
13. Write an eBook
It’s easier than ever to self-publish a book these days with Amazon. Some ebooks that people sell aren’t that huge. You don’t have to write a novel.
I see a lot of little informational ebooks selling for $5 or less. That might not seem like much but millions of people shop on Amazon. You could really make a killing selling a small ebook that you can write at home.
Ibotta is a grocery app that gives you cash for buying certain products. I get free rebates constantly from stuff I buy at Walmart with this app. You also get $5 for each person you refer to Ibotta.
It’s not exactly a way to make tons of cash but it’s a way to save money, which in my opinion, is still making money work for you.
15. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing and blogging go hand-in-hand. Affiliate marketing is when you refer someone to buy a product or service. If the person you refer makes a purchase, you receive a commision.
It’s a great way to promote products and companies you believe in. It’s a win-win for everyone. You get to share a product or service you love that can make someone’s life better, the company you love gets the sale, and you get a commision.
You don’t always receive a commision though. Sometimes the links provided in blog articles have a “cookie-length”. For instance, Amazon has a super short 24-hour cookie-length.
If you have any writing skills or graphic design skills, freelancing a great way to make money from home.
- content writer
- logo designer
- social media marketing
- relationship advice
- tarot reading
- guitar lessons
- family genealogy research
There are tons of options that don’t involve writing or graphic design. The joy of freelancing is that you can work however much you want.
17. Web Design Services
If you have ANY sort of web design skills, you can help others design a website.
Most people don’t want to be troubled with the ins-and-outs of figuring out web design. I’ve personally been seriously considering offering web design serves. I’m by no means an expert but I did spend a lot of time learning. This particular website, And This Potato, I built completely by myself with no prior knowledge.
18. Life Coaching
Life coaching is a hot business right now. There are no requirements to become a life coach but it does help if you take some classes and prepare yourself.
Becoming a life coach can be a deeply fulfilling career option that still allows you to be flexible in the hours you need at home. Don’t be afraid to charge a premium price. If someone is not invested in doing life-work, they won’t do it. Both you and your client will end up wasting each other’s time.
19. Make Printables
Make something once and sell it all day, every day. Making printables is an awesome way to create passive income because you make the graphic art design once and then you sell it as a digital copy. It’s really amazing and something I’m considering doing myself.
20. Make Jewelry
If you have a love of jewelry, why not make it and sell it? You can sell jewelry on Etsy, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook– you name it!
My best friend sells her own line of jewelry on her personal website and on Etsy. She loves what she does!
21. Trade Stocks
I never thought I was “smart” enough to learn how to trade stocks. Before, if someone said the word “dividend” my brain would just shut off. I’ve come a long way in a year.
Yes, there are a lot of fancy mathematical terms when it comes to the stock exchange but the shocking truth of stocks is that most stock prices are based off of emotions and not necessarily the state of the company.
Remeber when Kylie Jenner said she barely used Snapchat and then Snapchat’s stock plummeted the next day? The actual company was fine, but the fear that a public figure like Kylie Jenner wasn’t using it caused the price to drop.
I’ve made some money from buying and selling stocks. It’s easier now than ever by using the app Robinhood. I feel fancy and grown up when I get notifications about my stock prices on my phone. It’s worth a shot!
22. Virtual Assistant
With most businesses being online these days– there’s a huge need for virtual assistants!
A virtual assistant can wear many hats such as:
- data entry
- cold calling
- Shopify assistant
- data mining
- customer service
You don’t need that much experience to start. You just need a willingness to work and the ability to follow directions.
If you’re already at home watching your own kids, why not add one or two more kids and make some extra cash? It’s a great way to make extra money and it gives your own child some social time.
24. Make Bath Bombs
Bath bombs are super in right now. They’re easy to make and easy to sell. You can market your bath bombs online or sell them at local flea markets. It’s generally really easy and cheap to reserve a merchant spot at a flea market. Give it a try!
25. Network Marketing
Mary Kay, Avon, Plexus, etc… the list could go on and on. Network marketing or Multi-Level Marketing gets a bad rap but from a business standpoint- it’s genius! A great thing about network marketing is that there are so many different companies to choose from- you have the freedom to pick a product that you can stand behind and be proud to sell.
26. Secret Shopping
Want to get paid to go out to eat? That’s my dream come true! There are legit companies that pay you to secretly review restaurants. Be wary when searching for these companies because there are a lot of false companies that lure you in to get your private information. Never give your information out online unless you’re 100% sure it’s a legit business.
27. Sell Old Books
Used books are so cheap and sometimes you can sell them for a major profit. Also, books are the perfect size! They easy to ship and easy to store.
I always cruise through the used books whenever I’m at a Goodwill or Salvation Army. I once found an old medical textbook that I bought for $5 and sold it on eBay for $75!
28. Take Stock Photos
If you have a nice camera and a willingness to learn some basic photography skills, it’s easy to make some sellable stock photos. You can sell your stock photos to companies like Shutterstock and then continue to reap the royalties every time someone buys them. You can also sell your stock photos on your own website and keep the entire profit to yourself.
Selling stock photos is another great source of passive income because you do the work once- and continue to reap the benefits indefinitely.
29. Start a YouTube Channel
If you’ve got a phone with a camera, you can start a YouTube channel. I’ve just started one myself so I’ll keep you posted on the progress. Once you hit 1,000 subscribers, you can start monetizing your videos with advertisements.
Video creation and editing is a fun creative outlet. It also fits right the mom lifestyle because it’s basically just documenting everyday life.
30. Create an App
If you have an idea for an app- you can make it a reality. There are TONS of programs available that can help you create a profitable app. NO CODING REQUIRED!
Check out sites like:
This list has only 30 ways to make money from home but there are so many more. I’ve spent the last two years researching, working, and trying out different ways to make money online.
For me, blogging is my most favorite way to make money from home but pick what feels best for you! I’m deeply passionate about helping moms create independence for themselves. Caring for our children is a top priority- but so is leading by example and showing our children how to be successful in life.
With the internet and social media, it’s easier than ever to start an online business. It’s also the best time ever because the internet has only been around for about 20 years and it’s not going anywhere. The internet is the future and the future is now. Grab your slice of the internet bread while it’s still hot!
Happy creating, mamas!
